#dog - #Goodbye Best Boy

Goodbye Best Boy

It's been 27 hours since he dislocated his hips. 24 hours since he spent the night whimpering in the garage. 18 hours since my dad had called me, telling me he and my mom were taking him up to the farm so they could end his pain. Today, there weren't any open clinics in the area, they were going to have to find another way to put him down.

12 hours since I received that text from my mom, "Bear is sleeping peacefully now."

And now I'm drinking to the memory of a passed family member. A golden retriever who'd serve and protect my family's yard for 14 years, and treat every stranger with a kindness you couldn't find in any other heart.

A good boy: the best boy. Here's to Bear.

So you want to own a dog #4 (What to look for in a puppy)

SO YOU WANT TO OWN A DOG #4    (What to look for in a puppy)      Visually examine each puppy.Look for obvious signs of good health such as bright eyes and easy movement with no obvious lameness.compare one pup with another, looking at their heads, bodies, and limbs. All may look the same at first, but on careful inspection, you will begin to notice the subtle differences within the litter. Conscientious breeders will let you physically examine the litter. Each pup, even from the tiniest breed, should feel substantial. Even though your purchase will be contingent upon your vet, inspect from head to toe.  (Check the top of head) no soft spot present (fontanel)  (Nose) is cool and moist; no mucus when nostrils are squeezed; good visible openings for easy breathing  (Chest) Heart should feel strong through the wall of the chest. (Joints) Well-constructed, not loose (your vet will check this)  (Belly) Clean and smooth with no bulge at navel (an umbilical hernia)  ( Knees) Kneecaps (patella)should not slip off (your vet will check this, especially in toy breeds)  (Legs and feet) Legs should be straight and well-formed; feet should not be splayed or flat-footed, but bear weight equally; movement should be free and smooth-no faltering or limping. (Eyes) The eyes should be symmetrical and look straight ahead. There should be no tear staining below them, and the eyelids should neither roll in(entropion) nor hang loose(ectropion)--(Ears) There should be no crust on the ear tips. Ears should have good hair cover. Ear Canales should be clean and sweet- smelling. The puppy should show no head shaking or tenderness when you touch its ears.  (Skin and coat) There should be no scale, dandruff, or flaking skin in the hair.  no thinning or balding patches. You should feel no unexpected bumps or crusty patches. (Gums and teeth)The upper incisors must fit neatly over the lower incisors.Gums should be pink and healthy and may have pigment spots. (Anal and Genital area) The anal region should have no redness or hair loss. In a female, the vulva should have no inflammation, discharge, or "pasting" of hair (a sign of discharge and vaginitis). In a male, both testicles should be present in the scrotum, and the foreskin (prepuce) should slide back and forth easily with no sticking.  (Behavior)  Temperament testing is not very accurate in young puppies.----Next Week---So you want to own a dog #5   (Vet's Advice)     -----Repreve-----Brad Malone----Bruce Fogle, DVM----http://justenufstuff.com

New Whippet, need lifestyle and daily care advice

Hi all, about to pull the trigger on a new Whippet puppy. I am not sure if my lifestyle is the best for a 2 month old puppy. I live in a small studio apartment next to a big field farm area with lots of running areas for dogs. I also live next to my workplace, 3-4mins biking distance. I work a 9 to 5 job. I know a puppy needs constant supervision, so I was thinking of bringing the puppy to work for the first few months. I am not sure if this is even a good idea for developing good behaviors for the puppy. I would be able to walk the dog mornings, at lunch and evenings. My main concerns are the small size of my studio apartment and the fact that bringing the dog to work seems like the only option to keep an eye on it. How do people handle the puppy training in situations like this?

Thank you for any help and advice!
