I'm a medic (military and civilian) so I'm used to people being "sick", many on the brink or had passed eventually. I've been sick, family had been sick...but for some weird reason my dog is diagnosed with pyometria and I'm just so messed up. I think I'm having anxiety.
I can't think straight since this started happening on Saturday, esp. when it finally dawned on me that I need to get her surgery ASAP yesterday I can't do anything. I can't workout (I usually workout at gym to get this pent up stuff out), I can't even eat, I have a headache and stressing out about her.
She's has an appt. for tomorrow morning but I'm freaking out rn.
I've always downplayed my pet (whom I've had for 14 yrs) in regards with her relations to me (because I've always afraid to get attached, trauma probably from being dumped in the past), but I am jacked up more than I thought I was gonna be.
That and the finances on this (although I'm actually pretty good because I am well financed for the most part). But I feel scared leaving the house in fear something might happen to her while I'm gone. She's actually fairly stable but goddammit I'm scared as hell. I'm a grown ass man lol.
Anyone else like this before or rn?
We just got a new dog, a 3 year old Old Time Scotch Collie, and unfortunately she arrived to us while in heat. We are absolutely planning on spaying her, but obviously that's not an option right now, so we're just riding out this heat cycle.
We had planned on starting training her after she had recovered from arriving, but this has been postponed due to the fact that she has very limited interest in treats. She wouldn't eat her regular dog food (that she was on before coming to us) until I started adding some canned dog food, which made sense because dogs in heat often lose their appetite. But refusing treats?
She hates zuke's, despises dog cookies, and doesn't care for most other store bought dog treats. So I started offering people food - bananas, toast, cereal, pancakes with and without syrup, apples, carrots, sweet potato, bits of hot dog, etc. Nothing. She even refuses peanut butter.
The only things she has shown even a mild interest in are cheese, freeze dried liver, and greenies. This is a problem not only because it makes training (particularly clicker training) more difficult, but also because I'm running out of things to stuff her kongs with, and she absolutely needs to have awesome and safe things to chew to keep her happy and stimulated (I don't feel comfortable giving her things like bones or rawhide for this reason https://www.preventivevet.com/dogs/popular-dog-chews-that-are-actually-dangerous-to-dogs).
So my question is, is my dog being super picky because she's in heat? Because she's been in a new home less than a week? Because she's a herding breed? Because she's just finicky? All of the above? Our last dog was essentially a vacuum who ate anything and everything offered to him from day one, so this is new territory for me.
Hi everyone! This weekend I went to an adoption event at a local pet store. I fell in love with the sweetest little dog named Rosie. I immediately went home, filled out an application, and today my application was approved! Once I set up a time to meet with Rosie's foster family, I'll get to adopt her! I wanted to ask this community for any tips. What did you wish you knew when you adopted a dog? What can I do to make the process go as smoothly as possible? What are some must have supplies (besides the basics, of course). I just want her to be as calm and comfortable as possible!
Some background: Rosie is 1.5 years old, the vet that saw her when she was rescuers said she is a Manchester terrier but to me, she looks more like an Italian greyhound. She is very calm and low energy. She was found as a stray. Rosie is also heart worm positive, and I will be working with the rescue to get her her treatment for that.
