Do dogs ever fake injuries?

I think my dog is pretending to be hurt to get attention, I just can't find any credible sources confirming this can happen!

My Mal-Shi hurt her back a month ago and of course, we rushed her to the vet and got pain medication, watched her like a hawk, and she got better in 3-4 days. Apparently, Shih Tzu's are prone to back issues. Anyways, the last couple of days, whenever we're petting/playing with our other dog, she will walk with a hunch and act down so we panic and try comfort her. She'll act normally (when eating, going outside, getting a treat, playing) and when i call her, she'll walk over to me acting all helpless. Literally day and night. Vet says it's too soon to run off and do an MRI, and since she's been fine the last 3 weeks, we just need to keep our eye on her. I swear she's faking, but I don't know if that's a legit thing!

Grounds for possible insurance claim through Healthy Paws?

So we have Healthy Paws and signed up on 4/11/18 just in case anything were to happen. Our dog is 2 and we had got him from a family on craigslist that couldn't take care of him. We submitted all the up to date records they had to Healthy Paws. On 04/21/18 we went to vet care facility and found out our dog Lou, has heartworm. Now, my question is, do you think Healthy Paws will see this as a pre condition and not insure the medication?

Edit: The reason why I have not called to ask is the 15 day time period goes up tomorrow, and I do not want to shoot myself in the foot calling in. If anyone has been in similar situation I would like to hear it and the outcome.
