Not sure if this is the right place but it is called dogs!

I was watching an episode of NCIS and basically a man went for a hug with the target and the target got stabbed and the dog just watched and did not bark or attack (this was while he was walking the dog), in a real life situation. Let's say I get mugged while walking my dog (not a big dog). Would it attack or do anything?

Or if i was in my room and an intruder came in would the dog know? or would he just bark or do nothing

sorry if this is not the right place to post but just curious! anyone have any facts or knowledge on dogs defending? or if they don't why?
