Last night I was walking up my driveway from getting the mail when my girlfriend let our 1 year old dog out to use the bathroom. When he noticed me coming he must not have realized it was me because it was dark so he started barking and growling like a normal dog. I kinda hunched over and crept at him to play around and he cautiously made his way closer a few feet at a time. But then he started to snort the same exact way a deer will. I know deer do this as an alarm type of sound but I've never seen this behavior in a dog. Does anyone know if this is normal and what exactly the purpose behind it is?
