Getting a dog with a girlfriend, who is scared of dogs.

My signifigant other and I, have recently moved into a little house, and she have ageed that it would be okay for me to get a dog. Problem is, she is scared of dogs. It's not nearly as bad as it was a couple years ago, but if a loose dog runs up to her, she'll tenes up, stand still and get tears in her eyes.

So the dog I'm looking for, should be extreamly calm, and maybe even a little reserved. I myself have a very mild temper, and would mostly, like a dog as a loyal partner, and a buddy to take for long walks.

It should probably be fairly easy to train, so that it can pick up on which areas of the house are restricted.

This is my first dog since childhood, so Any advice would be deeply appreciated. Thank you.
