#dog - #What do I communicate to my dog when I touch the side of his muzzle?

What do I communicate to my dog when I touch the side of his muzzle?

Brief backstory: New rescue dog; have had him a week; he is stubborn, and notorious for mouthing fingers and body parts when he gets excited. This action started as a way to make sure that he didn't mouth me. He hasn't mouthed me at all when I've done this.

I have found myself naturally touching his muzzle gently when I approach him, and he doesn't really respond. He doesn't seem to like or dislike it, but I'm sure I am communicating something in his language. We are still working on gaining respect with him, so I a, wondering if this is a sign of dominance, or something.

Any dog language experts in the house?
