So you want to own a Dog #6 Teaching Your Dog To Come To You

So You Want To Own A Dog #6 ---Teaching your Dog to come to you--- 1--- Stand a short distance away from the puppy, in a quiet room with no distractions. A hallway is an ideal location. With a food treat visible in your hand, speak the puppy's name and, as it begins to move forward, give the command "come." ---2--- As the puppy moves toward you, praise it by saying the words "good dog" using a bright and enthusiastic tone of voice. Encourage the puppy to come directly to you by bending your knees and opening your arms wide.---3--- As the puppy approaches, kneel down to get closer to its level. Praise the puppy again with words and stroking as well as giving the food reward. In order to maintain the interest of the dog, vary the locations in which the training takes place.---To ensure that your dog always complies with your instructions, use a thin houseline (or, when you are outdoors, the leash) to ensure you can always get your dog's attention. Do not use it like a fishing line, to reel in your dog. Instead, give a quick jerk on the leash to get its attention, then draw the dog to you with your reward, not with tension on the lead. Never say "come" unless you are sure your dog will obey. Never use the word "come" to call your dog to discipline. If your dog does not respond properly or does something wrong, avoid the word "no" Save that for more serious misdemeanors. Introduce a neutral word such as "wrong" if it does not get the command right. If your dog loses concentration, you have probably chosen the wrong time or place for training. Try again when it is better prepared. Before training, always let your dog play vigorously first to burn off excess energy!
