How much time to I need daily to properly take care of a medium sized dog (e.g. Golden Retriever)?

Context: I would love to adopt a dog, but have never had one. I want to just clarify how much time I will need to give one a good life so I can plan for it. Detailed responses welcome, especially concerning whether I will need more time when it is a pup etc.

Bonus question: to what extent is it acceptable to leave a dog alone whilst working?
