So You Want To Own A Dog #9---Teaching Your Dog To Walk On A Leash---1---The training for this exercise should start indoors. The puppy should be wearing a comfortable, well-fitting collar. Let the puppy look at and smell the leash, then attach the leash to the collar.---2---With the puppy on your left side, hold the leash and food reward in your right hand. Your left-hand hold the slack, ready to slide down to the collar .Give the puppy the "Sit " command. ---3---Begin to walk with your left foot first. as the puppy walks beside you, give the command "Heel." if the puppy surges forward, slide your left hand down the leash to its collar and pull backward.---4---When the puppy is in heel position, give the reward and verbal praise.Then give the command to "Sit." Slowly increase the distance you cover as the puppy obeys the sequence of commands,---5---Once the puppy is able to walk to heel and sit obediently as you go in a straight line, you can train it to turn right.Guide it around to the right with your left hand, and give the command"Heel." ---6---To make a left turn, and increase your own speed and hold the food in front of the puppy nose to slow it down.
