Help, my dog won't stop barking at the local stray cat
My 1.5 year old German Shepard mix is pretty much perfect, except his hatred for the local stray cat. He is very well mannered, and loves humans and dogs. He never shows aggression when on walks and meeting new people and pups. He is also extremely trainable and learns quickly. We thought he was gosh darn perfect until the local stray cat came waltzing up on our porch, and our pup went nuts. Barking, jumping on the glass, and whining. So my first question is;
-
Why is he reacting this way? He does not growl at the cat, just barks excessively and jumps at the glass door. But his tail is wagging the whole time, and sometimes he even starts to shake if he gets really worked up. I'm not sure if he is showing aggression, fear, or some other emotion.

We have tried training him not to do this, but it's the only thing he is being stubborn on. We tried telling him not to bark (surprisingly he use to bark at the neighbors walking by when we first got him, I told him a firm "no", and after a week he stopped), pulling him away from the door, and then putting him on his leash and taking him to the cat. Nothing worked. He still gets crazy when the cat comes around.
Also, getting rid of the cat is not an option. Our landlords are pretty fond of the cat, it has been around for years and is super friendly with myself and the neighbors.
