#dog - #Got a noise complaint about my dog and I am clueless about what to do. Please help!

Got a noise complaint about my dog and I am clueless about what to do. Please help!

I have lived in my townhouse for approximately a year with the same neighbors. I have two roommates and between us, we have two dogs total.

My dogs do bark, primarily when someone first arrives home (which subsides relatively quickly), if they hear another dog barking outside, or if a sudden noise alarms them. With all of us working varying shifts, we arrive home at all hours of the day/night, which can create a quick burst of barking but again, it subsides quickly. Additionally, we live right next to a fire station (every time a firetruck alarm goes off...you guessed it, barking). And our walls are paper thin - we can hear EVERYTHING our neighbors do - from opening/closing doors, to walking up and down stairs, to full-on conversations. This also is a frequent cause of barking from our dogs.

Yesterday, I received a notice on my door from the complex management saying the neighbors complained about the barking and to consider the complaint our first notice of lease violation.

I'm not sure why, after a year, it's suddenly a problem now, but I digress.... I am truly stumped on what to do or how to handle this. I certainly don't want to create trouble or a hostile environment, I don't want to get kicked out of my place, and I am not getting rid of the dogs. I am planning on Moving in April anyways, but want to keep the peace until then. We really are decent people and respectful tenants, but I am just really unsure of how to tackle this.

Any advice I've read online directed towards the person complaining - none for the dog owners themselves and nearly all the articles insinuate the owner simply doesn't care. That isn't true. My dogs are actually really well behaved and have someone home with them most of the time. They aren't barking all day every day. They stop when I tell them to, but I can't prevent them from initially barking altogether. I'm also slightly ticked that at least 75% of the barking stems from the noise our neighbors are making. I also don't know what to do for the couple hours that they ARE home alone during the day and I can't be there to tell them to immediately stop.

Please help. I do not want a hostile living situation for the next few months but truly don't know what to do about this.
