Slipped Disc / Paralysis in Dog Leg
Hello everyone, on Wednesday afternoon my 8 year old back lab/Australian Shepard mix managed to slip a disc in his back. He was taken to en emergency vet because it caused him to have total paralysis in his back right leg, and his back left leg is not as strong as it should be. He was given an X-ray and has no broken bones. The vets wanted to send him further away to get an MRI to see how much damage was done to his spinal columns. My dog can still use the bathroom, however he has to be harnessed and it is a struggle. They wanted to do a 10,000 dollar surgery which unfortunately is too much of a financial problem to pursue. My family and I love my dog to death and want the best for him. He seems to be getting stronger everyday, moves more, he doesn't whimper in pain, and his paralyzed leg still has a strong pulse, however he has no feeling in that leg. We are keeping him stationary, only moving him to use the bathroom. We also are doing occasional bicycle exercises with both back legs. Does anyone have experience with something like this? Is it possible for him to recover without this ridiculous surgery?
One last thing, my dog will move his right leg in his sleep only, he'll stretch both legs out, kick his leg. I understand these can be basic muscle spasms however this means his brain is still able to receive the signals resulting in that spinal column not being fully damaged. I really wish we could get him the proper help he needs, but unfortunately money speaks for everything.. Any feedback will be greatly appreciated!!!
