#dog - #Standard Poodles

Standard Poodles

Hi I'm very new to redditt this is my first post I'm thinking about getting a standard or Moyen poodle in 3-4 years and I would like those familiar with the breed to see if they think a standard poodle is a good fit for me all recommendations a appreciated.

I'm very very in favor of adopting typically my dog will probably be with me the last stretch of my most capable young years (26/27 to I'm hoping my early 40 if I'm lucky) and I'd really like to purchase this dog from a reputable health testing breeder I adopted seniors or older adult dogs I've adopted one young dog. one the best dogs I've ever owned was a border collie mix and I sadly did not get to have her as long as I wanted she was 11-12 years old and lived to be 17-18 I'm sad I only had her 5 years, my lab chessie mix had a lot of health problems but a very good dog was only 10 out of an oopsie litter from a relative. my current is a terrier boxer mix that generally only live 9-12 I'd really love to have a dog make it 13+ years. Poodles that make it past 12 yrs generally live to be 15-18 from what I've gathered

1) Will this be your first dog? If not, what experience do you have owning/training dogs?

This will be my fourth dog. I previously owned a border collie mix, a lab chessie mix and currently own a medium sized terrier mutt. I've fostered shelter dogs as well

2) Do you have a preference for rescuing a dog vs. going through a reputable breeder?

Ive rescued 2 dogs and the third was a rehomed dog. I have no issue with adopting but this time around I would really like to buy a puppy so I can have a better idea of its tempermant and health. I've adopted adult dogs and an older puppy and id ideally love to have this one around longer.

3) Describe your ideal dog.

I'd love a smart willing to please dog. One that can be my hiking, walking snuggle buddy ( can be cuddly lovey but when I'm done can be okay minding her business for a bit. Like) Small enough to be able to take her with me but big enough to be fun. Not a lap dog 25lb minimum 70lb max. A watch dog not aggressive just let's me know when people are there and potentially would not let a stranger in my house. stranger wary to politely friendly is fine . A moderately active dog 2-3 hours a day on average of exercise some days maybe more at minimum she'd get an hour walk and fetch. this does not include time spent training, grooming and cuddle time. Would be good with cats as I have one, can be indifferent/to friendly with new dogs I will have one aging adult dog 8 years old. Tolerant to friendly with kids I don't really plan on her being around alot of them but would like her to be okay around them so I'd socialize her with nieces and nephews. Would like with training to be reliable off leash for hiking or going to the lake where it's permitted. Would prefer the dog is not short haired I live in northern Washington it gets cold in the winter.

4) What breeds or types of dogs are you interested in and why?

Retrievers, gundogs and herd dogs they seem more orientated to want to do things with the owner ( labs/goldens I like but poor protectors, border Collies/aussies are awesome to much energy for me though)versus a hound that wants to do his own thing. Tempermant is first looks come second for me. I'm not a huge fan of stubborn I can work with a dog that likes to learn.

  • ANSWER 5) What sorts of things would you like to train your dog to do?

Fetch, tug I war, off and on leash, puzzles, advanced tricks like toy sorting, sit, down, stay, roll over, shake, other paw, smile, get my slippers, optional* agility and obedience could be fun

Care Commitments 6) How long do you want to devote to training, playing with, or otherwise interacting with your dog each day?

A minimum hour walk each day I'll start with less and build up so to not damage growth plates. usually I like walking about 1.5 miles up to 3 miles depending on the day 30 min of a game fetch, tugowar, hidenseek. Some evening snuggling will kind of depend day to day how much. Training will be every day at the very least short daily sessions 20 min and longer ones on weekends also longer fun trips to the park or beach on weekends so roughly that's 3+ hours a day

7) How long can you exercise your dog each day, on average? What sorts of exercise are you planning to give your dog regularly and does that include using a dog park?

Daily walks will be about an hour or 1.5-3miles, Plus fetch and games for 30 min or more love. Dog that likes fetch We do not have a dog park but weekends I'd take her to the regular park I'll also go to creeks or the beach in the summer when possible

8) How much regular brushing are you willing to do? Are you open to trimming hair, cleaning ears, or doing other grooming at home? If not, would you be willing to pay a professional to do it regularly?

I'm willing to brush every other day if I encorperate it into snuggle time I can do it daily. I love putting bandanas and bows on my girls. I'm open to home grooming but would also have no issue with paying a professional as well. My current dog loves our local groomers and I take her just because she enjoys it so much.

Personal Preferences 9) What size dog are you looking for?

Medium sized i have had large dogs as well bigger isn't a deal breaker but no lap dogs they need to be 25lbs or bigger I don't want a bird taking my dog out of my fenced yard. Would like no bigger than 70lbs preferably because my current dog is 60lbs I like to afford top quality pet food bigger dog more food ideally the dog would be between 30-65 lbs

  • ANSWER 10) How much shedding, barking, and slobber can you handle?

Minimal to normal slobber I don't mind a drooly toy I had a labmix before just no danglers. Moderate barking is fine I've been able to train all my dogs to be quiet when asked. Shedding I honestly don't care to much if the dog is nice and fluffy makes up for it if not prefer less shedding because it gives me more time to play with my dog if I have less to Clean.

11) How important is being able to let your dog off-leash in an unfenced area?

Very important I do not want a dog that likes take off. I want to be able to go camping hiking exedera with good recall.

Dog Personality and Behavior* 12) Do you want a snuggly dog or one that prefers some space?

I would like a dog that likes being near me but not a clinger follows me around is eager for pets when offered but doesn't relentlessly hound me around the house all day I adore my dogs she will not get a shortage of pets believe you me lol

13) Would you prefer a dog that wants to do its own thing or one that's more eager-to-please?

Would much prefer an eager to please dog I have a decent amount of dog training experience but I find eager to please dogs more fun to teach. Stubborn independent dogs leave me feeling frustrated though iv had one and I buckled down and trained her she's a good dog but I miss the eagerness a lab or border collie has

14) How would you prefer your dog to respond to someone knocking on the door or entering your yard? How would you prefer your dog to greet strangers or visitors? *

I would like the dog to bark let me know someone is there a little wary (not shy or timid more like watchful) of strangers at first but warms up quickly.

15) Are you willing to manage a dog that is aggressive to other dogs? *

No I'm not interested in dog aggressive dogs. Nothing annoys me more I don't need protection from people walking dogs I'm not afraid to fight a dog. Would prefer my dog is vigilant of strange people but non aggressive just watchful. Step in if I get mugged.

ANSWER 16) Are there any other behaviors you can't deal with or want to avoid? *

Would like to stay away from notorious escape artists (huskies) Digging ( for reasons other than lack of exercise) High prey drive ( I realize poodles are gundogs but I'm talking more like sighthounds)

Lifestyle 17) How often and how long will the dog be left alone?

Probably 4-6 hours there will be occasions when I'm gone 8 hours not frequently. My husband is home part of the time I will have a fenced enclosed dog run that has a dog door into the house so they can go potty whenever she needs.

  • ANSWER 18) What are the dog-related preferences of other people in the house and what will be their involvement in caring for the dog?

My husband is pretty non involved hands off he has little dog training experience he had a lab and an outside Pyrenees as a kid. he will feed/water if I'm not available, play fetch occasionally. He will not walk the dog but we will have a fenced mid sized yard.

19) Do you have other pets or are you planning on having other pets? What breed or type of animal are they?

I currently have one cat all grey pretty playful not shy. My current dog will be 8 years old when I get the puppy she's a rescue mutt 60lb terrier, boxer something else? she's fine with all friendly dogs and will be a good example for house manners for the puppy. I do plan on buying a house with a little acreage in 5 years after I buy my trailer or so and will also socialize the dog with chickens farm critters when young to avoid chasing.

20) Will the dog be interacting with children regularly?

Not regularly I'm not a fan of toddlers or unrelated children would prefer the dog tolerated kids 5+up on occasion.

21) Do you rent or plan to rent in the future? If applicable, what breed or weight restrictions are on your current lease?

I plan on owning a house before the puppy comes home. I do not plan to rent in the future there are very few pet friendly rentals for anyone in the general area but should some occasion arise her being a very long time shed breed would be in my favor

22) What city or country do you live in and are you aware of any laws banning certain breeds? I'm in the USA in Washington where we do not have bsl in my area or in most of the state.

23) What is the average temperature of a typical summer and winter day where you live?

Winters are long and relatively cold and snowy 20-34 degrees in the winter 78-88 in the summer I do not leave my dog outside unsupervised for more than short periods of time once it's over 90 or under 25 degrees.

Additional Information and Questions*

All in all I want to be prepared to be the best owner I can be for my future dog I will have saved enough to pay for puppy obedience classes, all it's supplies crate, toys, bed, treats in advance. I feed Victor dog food supplemented with farm fresh eggs. I will take a week off from work to get the puppy settled in to a routine and get her aquainted with the house mates.
