Aggressive rottweiler and new puppy
I don't know if anybody will read this, but it might help someone someday.
6 years ago we took a rottweiler puppy into our home, his name is Leo. We already had an old labrador, Buddha, so the two of them were like father and son. But we noticed that Leo wasn't really friendly with other dogs, he was actually very aggressive towards other dogs. We tried to socialize him, but we weren't successful at all. He is really good with people, but the moment he sees other dogs he's ready to attack. He did attack few dogs ( one of them was female during the estrus period, he wasn't even trying to sniff her). We only walk him with muzzle on, and we rarely walk him (we have a really big yard so he's good). He was only good with Buddha, since he was like a father to him, and cats for some reason. But Buddha passed away about a year ago, and since then Leo is really depressed.
So we decided to adopt a puppy, but first we would see how Leo reacts to it. We adopted a two months husky and german shepherd mix puppy, and then the journey started... At first we kind of lost hope, because in the beginning Leo was sniffing him, but then he got very excited and became violent. He even tried to bite him, I was terrified that he would kill the puppy, it wasn't a joke. We even called a guy who trains police dogs, and he said that it's too late to train him, because he is now 6 years old, and that we should try few more times, but give up if he doesn't change. But we didn't want to give up on any of them, Leo needed a new buddy and this puppy needed a home.
So next step was muzzle and a leash for Leo. He was still violent, he wasn't leaving this puppy alone. Few days passed and we noticed Leo was waving his tail a lot, and his behavior changes in a way that he now wanted to control this puppy (like sheep). We decided to take off the leash, but keep the muzzle on, and it went well. So a week passed and Leo completely changed, he wanted to play with the puppy! They were running around the yard together side by side, we noticed that Leo was kind of "showing" him where he can go and where not (which is amazing since rottweilers are actually herding breed), he was trying to stop him whenever he would try to run around. Leo became very careful, trying not to step on the puppy ( who is now being called Haru), and he wasn't that "obsessed" with him anymore..
After a week, we took his muzzle off. My heart was racing like crazy, trust me after what I saw Leo was capable I was scared to death for Haru, still... And then we were surprised, they were playing! Leo was a little rough on him, but since he wasn't social he didn't know how to behave. Every time Leo was losing control and becoming rough we hit him with the leash ( on butt ), we had to because he never listened, about anything. Leo is just a dog who doesn't react to voice tone or food and treats, he's a stubborn lad, trust me we tried to make him decent, but unsuccessfully.
So... one month forward, they are best buds! We are really happy. I am really proud of Leo, he is very patient with Haru, tries not to hurt him and always playing. And Haru is a real pain in the ass, always biting and jumping on him.
So don't give up, never give up on your dog and miracle happen :D Leo was a killer dog ( he's probably still aggressive towards other dogs), but now he has his best bud and I'm sure this changed him a lot.
The only problems is... Haru taught Leo to dig holes and ruin my grandmothers garden full of flowers :)
