The dog's facial expressions depend on the attention that humans give him
A recent study has just shown that the dog adapts its facial expressions to better communicate with humans.
As an owner, you may have already noticed that your dog is susceptible to your attitude and that he adapts accordingly. It's not just an impression. That's the reality. According to researchers at the University of Portsmouth in the United Kingdom, dog facial movements are indeed a mode of communication, and they change depending on our attitude.

The dog favours communication if the human is attentive
To arrive at these conclusions, the researchers, led by Juliane Kaminski, studied 24 pet dogs of different breeds and ages ranging from 1 to 12 years. All these dogs were respectively placed one metre from a human who, sometimes, facing them with food in hand, sometimes from behind without food, attentive or distracted. The researchers then realized that
"the muscles of their faces move more if the human is attentive."
We can, therefore, conclude that the dog knows very well to capture our attention when he sees that we are receptive to it. He usually does his famous "beaten dog look," which we often interpret as a sign of sadness "when there is no evidence that this is the case," Kaminski says. Anyway, this air waits for us, and that, the dogs have understood ... even if we do not deduce, according to the researchers, that dogs use this look to soften us!
